This course introduces the student to advanced geological mapping techniques by having them map and describe structurally complex, folded and faulted sedimentary rocks in a hilly terrain in the Robertson area. During this exercise they record field observations, take measurements and produce a geological map as well as a report on the lithologies encountered and structures developed in the area. The students also examine the theory of plate tectonics in detail, looking at the mechanics of plate motions and the effects of ductile and brittle deformation in the crust and mantle.
