This course deepens the student’s understanding of magmatic and metamorphic processes and deals with the classification of, and mineralogical, textural and geological processes that form igneous and metamorphic rocks. These rocks together form the bulk of the Earth’s crust and hence an understanding of their nature, origin and characteristics is vital to any geologist. The course also examines ore-forming processes that concentrate economic deposits on or near the Earth’s surface and examines the magmatic, hydrothermal and sedimentary processes that give rise to economic concentrations of metals, industrial minerals, hydrocarbons or other materials of interest.
