First Year module

Introduction to geology provides a basic understanding of the physical Earth and the various processes it has undergone through its 4.6 billion year history. The course follows the origin of the earth and its various changes that has occurred resulting in its present day state. Introduction to minerals and rocks is a major part of the course as these are products related to basic earth processes and is the fundamental concept of most courses relate to geology. Introduction to stratigraphy, its principles and its relation to historical geology and is detailed subject matter regarding the geology and stratigraphy of Southern Africa. A basic understanding of the concept of earth dynamics, including rock deformation and structural features associated with it is an integral part of the course as these principles are demonstrated in practical sessions introducing mapping techniques. The course culminates with Earth resources which relate these underlying principles to the formation of mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
